Call for accountibility

A call to hold the government and security agencies to account for the terrorist attack

Summary:

  1. With all the anti-terror laws in place, terrorist attacks still happen.
  2. The Australian government and the security agencies must be held to account.

1- The cycle of a terrorist attack

The tragic incident at Bondi Beach on 15 Dec. occurred during a moment meant for joy and celebration.

Yet, as devastating as it is, this tragedy is already following a familiar and unacceptable pattern seen in terrorist attacks across Australia, the UK, the US, France, New Zealand, and beyond,
and it risks ending without any accountability from the very authorities tasked with protecting the public.

1.1- As in past incidents, the police response focused solely on eliminating the perpetrators, rather than capturing them alive for a proper investigations to uncover:

  • How they were radicalised
  • who financed them
  • whether others were involved and remain at large
  • what group they belonged to
  • how that group was formed and operates

1.2- As in past incidents, political parties are exploiting the tragedy for their own gain.
While other groups are using the moment to incite hatred against ordinary members of the Muslim community.

But no one is asking why anti-terror laws, which
restrict citizens’ civil liberties,
stifle academic and public discourse,
limit lawful expression and civic participation,
expand surveillance powers,
and strip away privacy and due process,
still fail to prevent massacres like this.

1.3- As in past incidents, the story will fade from public attention once its news cycle has run its course, leaving the public vulnerable to the next attack.

2- Demand accountability

If we are serious about preventing future tragedies and ensuring every person and child can live in peace and free from fear, the government and security agencies endowed with vast powers and resources must answer for their failures in foiling these tragedies.

Therefore, I humbly call on the Jewish community, civil society, and the wider Australian public to demand a full, independent investigation into how such attacks continue to occur despite existing safeguards.

To Muslim organisations in Australia, let this serve as a reminder: demanding accountability is not only a civic duty for reform, but also a clear religious obligation:

  • Enjoining what is right defines a believer, as the Quran repeatedly affirms (3:104, 3:110, 3:114, 9:71, 22:41, 31:17), and
  • Engaging in holding people accountable is an active way of applying Quran 21:23, which limits unaccountability exclusively to God.

This cycle of tragedy and inaction can not continue. The time for action, and accountability is now.
